One Driver Arrested, One Still Wanted, in Brentwood Hit-and-Run

Suffolk County police arrested one driver for a hit-and-run that occurred in Brentwood and are still searching for the other driver.

Maria Ramirez was walking southbound on Brentwood Road at the Long Island Rail Road crossing on February 11 at approximately 3 a.m. when she was struck by a gray sedan and then a blue sedan, both of which fled the scene. Ramirez, 37, of Brentwood, was transported to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore for treatment of serious injuries.

On February 18, Third Squad detectives arrested Lius A. Melendez, 54, of 23 Churchill Drive, Brentwood, and charged him with leaving the scene of an accident with serious physical injury. He was driving a 2006 Honda Accord when the vehicle struck Ramirez and then fled the scene.

Melendez will be arraigned at  Third District Court in Central Islip at a later date.
