By the Assembly Minority Conference
The scope of our responsibilities as legislators is broad, and we are afforded the opportunity to protect the residents of New York through a diverse range of policies. One such way we can protect our constituency is through enacting laws to raise awareness about best practices and safety. The recently introduced “Alexander John Smullen Traffic Safety Memorial Law” is an incredible way to accomplish this important goal.
Assemblyman Robert Smullen (R,C-Mohawk Valley and the Adirondacks) introduced the bill in honor of his son AJ, who was tragically killed after being struck by a car on Feb. 22, 2024. AJ put up a fierce fight before passing away in March last year. His bravery and tenacity were truly inspirational, which is why I believe this legislation is such a fitting tribute to his life.
The bill would give family and friends the opportunity to buy roadway signage to memorialize victims of fatal vehicle accidents with the aim of raising awareness about the dangers of reckless driving. These signs will serve as both a reminder about the importance of driving safely and provide a touching public display to honor the victims of these accidents. I am proud to stand with Assemblyman Smullen, his wife Megan, state officials and members of both the Senate and Assembly to advocate for this common-sense, bipartisan measure. In the coming months, we will continue to push for its passage into law.
Additionally, in the coming days, Assemblyman Smullen will be unveiling a sign dedicated to AJ outside the Bellevue Woman’s Center on Route 7 near where his son’s accident occurred. That stretch of Route 7 in Niskayuna has proven unsafe as another pedestrian was hit and killed in almost the same location shortly after the Alexander John Smullen Traffic Safety Memorial Law was introduced. Clearly, action is needed, and getting this new law on the books would send a strong message about the importance of safe driving.
There are few pieces of legislation that draw widespread bipartisan support across all regions and backgrounds, but I believe this proposal is one of them. AJ, his family and all victims of tragic vehicle accidents deserve to be remembered. This measure not only memorializes those we have lost, but it may very well prevent future loss. I hope my colleagues will strongly consider this bill when it comes before them this session.
