LI State Delegation Should Oppose Chu’s MTA Board Appointment

Governor Kathy Hochul has submitted the name of Sammy Chu to be her representative for Suffolk County on the MTA board. https://www.newsday.com/opinion/the-point/the-point-newsday-metropolitan-transportation-authority-board-sammy-chu-marc-herbst-nancy-marks-o7kc32fw

This is the same Sammy Chu, who, as the representative from former Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone on the board, voted to impose congestion pricing on Suffolk commuters. https://www.newsday.com/long-island/transportation/mta-board-recommends-price-aqalaf2p

This was a direct slap in the face to the people he was supposed to represent. The board member for Nassau appropriately voted against imposing this tax on motorists, many from Long Island, driving into Manhattan.

Chu was obviously doing the governor, a fellow Democrat, a huge favor, and, now, it’s being returned. Governor Hochul will have a loyal ally on the MTA board who has shown in the past he will vote for New York City’s interests over the constituents he’s supposed to represent.

If our local delegation is worth anything, especially the Republicans who are supposed to be the loyal opposition, they will speak out loud and hard against Chu‘s appointment. He had the opportunity in the past to protect our taxpayers. He failed the test.
