NY Rounds out Top 5 of Nation’s Earners

A recent report from Visual Capitalist shows that New York State has the fifth-highest median income. The state was also one of five states in the Northeast to be in the top 10.

The median per-person income in the Empire State was $85,733, according to Visual Capitalist. The District of Columbia had the highest income with $108,233. Also in the top five were Massachusetts ($93,927), Connecticut ($93,235) and Wyoming ($85,945). Massachusetts was cited for having a “robust education, healthcare and tech sectors,” according to Visual Capitalist, while Connecticut was third because of its “strong finance and insurance industries.”

The Southeast had the lowest per-person income, according to the data from Visual Capitalist. Mississippi was at the bottom, with residents earning a median income of $52,017. West Virginia was next with $55,138, followed by Alabama ($56,684), Kentucky ($57,526) and New Mexico ($57,526). 

Visual Capitalist compiled the data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis and StatsAmerica.

The incomes were determined from wages, insurance benefits, rental and business income, interest and dividends and government benefits. It does not include capital gains from selling stock.

The incomes were not adjusted for cost of living.
