Governor Kathy Hochul and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) commemorated the 190th anniversary of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) on April 24, 2024, marking nearly two centuries of service and recent monumental advancements in the system.
“The founding of the Long Island Rail Road on April 24, 1834 marked a new beginning of travel and regional connectivity.”Hochul said.“It has delivered significant benefits to the tens of thousands of New Yorkers who rely on it every day and shows the importance of continuing to expand transit throughout our state.”
LIRR President Rob Free said, “The past 190 years have shown that the history of growth and development of Long Island is intertwined with the improvement and expansion of the Long Island Rail Road. The relationship continues all the way to today, where Long Island thrives in part because of its access to a 24-hour safe and reliable transportation system unlike any other in the country.”
Over the past five years, the LIRR has undergone significant transformations that have reshaped its operation and service capabilities. These changes include the implementation of Positive Train Control for enhanced safety, the completion of the Third Track Project between Floral Park and Hicksville, the introduction of service to the Elmont-UBS Arena, and the historic opening of Grand Central Madison. This new terminal not only provides direct LIRR service to Manhattan’s East Side for the first time but also significantly expands reverse commuting options.
MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber emphasized the historical significance of the recent upgrades, stating, “In the Long Island Rail Road’s 190-year history, the past five have been some of the most significant. With these initiatives, we have enhanced safety, service, and access across the network, benefiting millions of New Yorkers.”
The LIRR’s on-time performance has seen notable improvements, with figures reaching up to 96% in early 2024, alongside a 22% increase in ridership from the previous year. These achievements reflect the railroad’s commitment to reliability and efficiency in meeting the needs of its growing number of passengers.
The celebration also recognized the LIRR’s ongoing commitment to accessibility, with current projects focusing on ADA upgrades at several stations. These enhancements are part of a broader effort to ensure that all LIRR facilities meet modern accessibility standards, thereby fostering inclusivity and ease of travel for all commuters.
