The Village of Hempstead has received $5 million in housing grants which will be distributed to minority homeowners, who will use the money to pay for repairs to their houses.
The money is part of the $50 million grant program awarded through the Targeted Housing Investment Program to fund critical repairs for approximately 1,400 households in ten communities across New York State. The program will support communities with high rates of homeownership owned by households of color and where there are also significant indicators of housing distress. The funds will be distributed through local agencies.
Community Development Corp. of Long Island will administer the funds, which will be given to 110 households throughout the village.
Long Island Life & Politics reached out to the Village of Hempstead, but has not heard back as of press time.
“This one-of-a-kind program is helping to address longstanding inequities with funding to support nearly 1,400 New York households and protect their most sacred investments: their homes,” Governor Kathy Hochul said. “Addressing the housing crisis means ensuring that all New Yorkers can afford to live in a safe, stable home, and after the success of our Buffalo program, the Targeted Housing Improvement Program will help homeowners across our state build equity, fund critical repairs and create stronger, more resilient communities.”
