Congressman Nick LaLota (R-Rocky Point) introduced bipartisan legislation alongside Nicole Malliotakis (R-Staten Island) to expand a critical provision of the Working Families Tax Cut, eliminating federal taxes on overtime pay for all union workers. The bill was also introduced alongside Emilia Sykes (D-Ohio), Steven Horsford (D-Nevada), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pennsylvania), and Tom Suozzi (D-Glen Cove).
“By expanding the no-tax-on-overtime provision to cover more hardworking Long Islanders, including firefighters, police officers, and tradesmen, we honor their long hours, heavy responsibilities, and the sacrifices they make for our communities,” LaLota said. “The Working Families Tax Cut is already delivering historic wins for hardworking Suffolk County, and this next step ensures that even more men and women can keep more of what they’ve rightfully earned to bring home to their families.”
“No taxes on overtime pay simply means that American workers can keep more of their hard-earned wages and better support their families,” said Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien. “Expanding this policy to cover more Americans and more Teamsters — including those in the trucking, rail, and aviation industries — is common sense.”
Transportation Trades Department, AFL-CIO (TTD) President Greg Regan added, “Railroaders, aviation professionals, seafarers, emergency responders, and other union members put in long hours to keep our country moving and deserve to receive the full tax benefit of their overtime.”
“Firefighters across the nation continue to work grueling amounts of overtime and are denied time with their families,” said IAFF General President Edward Kelly. “The No Tax on Overtime provision was an important first step in helping these men and women who work more than 53 hours per week. The No Tax on Overtime For All Workers Act is a critical next step to ensure that all fire fighters can qualify for this tax protection and keep more of their hard-earned pay.”
“Under this expansion, pilots who work additional hours beyond their scheduled hours or monthly limits set by their airlines will benefit from increased tax deductions on their overtime earnings. We urge swift passage of this pro-worker legislation,” said Captain Jason Ambrosi, Air Line Pilots Association, Intl.
“This legislation will ensure that workers covered under the Railway Labor Act — including aircraft maintenance technicians —get a fair shake,” said AMFA National President Bret Oestreich. “By allowing these men and women to keep more of their hard-earned pay, this bill recognizes the sacrifices they make to keep our nation’s transportation system safe and reliable. Putting more money back into workers’ pockets is not only good for families, it strengthens the aviation workforce and helps protect good-paying union jobs here in America.”
