Self-Defense Class to Raise Funds for Alzheimer’s Research

Nokado School of Self Defense, a traditional Jiu-Jitsu martial arts studio serving the Kings Park community for over 45 years, will host a free self-defense class on November 15, from noon to 1:00 p.m., with proceeds benefiting the Alzheimer’s Association®. The studio is located at 48 Main Street, Kings Park.

Open to individuals ages 12 and up, the class will be led by Head Instructor Michael Saltzman and will cover practical self-defense techniques designed to promote safety, awareness, and confidence. No prior martial arts experience is needed, and all skill levels are welcome.

This event takes place during Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, a time dedicated to honoring those affected by the disease and raising support for care, research, and advocacy. The event offers participants the chance to learn real-world self-defense skills while supporting an important cause.

The Alzheimer’s Association® is the nation’s leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s care, support, and research, and proceeds from the class will directly support its mission.

The event continues a long-standing tradition at Nokado of offering free self-defense classes as a way of giving back to the community. Since taking over the school in 2022, Saltzman has turned these events into fundraisers for the Alzheimer’s Association in memory of his father, who passed away from complications related to dementia.

“I’m proud to offer this class in recognition of Alzheimer’s Awareness Month,” Saltzman said. “It’s a meaningful way to support an important cause while giving participants tools they can use to feel safer and more confident every day.”

While the class is free to attend, a suggested donation of $20 will be collected to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association®.
