Town of Riverhead Unveils Cherry Blossom Program to Honor Veterans

The Town of Riverhead Veterans Advisory Committee, and the local community, is working together to decorate Veterans Memorial Park in Calverton with cherry blossom trees, symbolizing respect, appreciation, and remembrance for our veterans.

The town is hoping that, at this time next year, everyone can gather for a cherry blossom tree festival in honor of the veterans.

“The idea came from the Veterans Advisory Committee to serve as a poignant reminder of the bravery and selflessness of our veterans and active-duty members, and enhance the park, which is undergoing changes with the addition of an ice rink, and a new parking lot,” said Councilman Ken Rothwell, Town Board liaison to the Veterans Advisory Committee. “The park is an ideal location, right across the street from Calverton National Cemetery.”

The plan establishes this unique program inviting individuals to purchase a six-foot tall cherry blossom tree which will be accompanied by a dignified 12-by 6-inch marker bearing the name of the honored veteran. These markers will stand as enduring tributes to the sacrifice, courage, and patriotism displayed by those who have served our country. The cost will be $675, which includes the tree, plaque, planting and maintenance. Families may purchase more than one tree for each Veteran.

“We are thrilled to witness the progress and unity that the Cherry Blossom Tree Program brings to our community,” exclaimed Town of Riverhead Supervisor Tim Hubbard. “This initiative fosters a sense of togetherness and gratitude among our residents. As we plant these trees of honor, we sow the seeds of a stronger, more connected community, where the legacy of our veterans continues to flourish.”
