North Hempstead residents and landscaping companies who conduct business in the town are being reminded that the town’s landscaping regulations are back in effect as of June 15. The regulations are aimed at reducing noise and air pollution caused by gas-powered leaf blowers. Under the regulations, commercial landscapers are prohibited from using gas-powered leaf blowers from June 15 to September 15 every year.
Commercial landscaping is permitted between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays; it may not take place on Sundays and holidays. These restrictions may be suspended during emergencies. Restrictions will not apply to their use at golf courses and cemeteries, except when equipment is operated within 100 feet of a residential lot.
The regulations come amid recent enforcement enhancements made by North Hempstead’s Public Safety and Code Enforcement department. Public Safety Commissioner Derek Skuzenski noted, “These temporary, seasonal regulations are in place to help alleviate both noise and natural pollution.” Residents can report violations by calling 311 or (516) 869-6311.
