On October 29, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Dan Panico and Councilwoman Karen Dunne Kesnig were on-site for the demolition of a “zombie house” located at 18 Overlook Drive in the Mastic Beach marshlands. This vacant, unfinished house was initially built without Town of Brookhaven permits, fell into disrepair, and became a blight in the neighborhood.
The structure was damaged by a fire, then partially rebuilt before ultimately being abandoned.
Earlier this year, the town acquired the property with the intent to preserve it as open space. In a gesture of sustainability, the town donated the windows from the property to Habitat for Humanity. Joining Panico and Kesnig at the site were members of the demolition team from the Town’s Department of Recycling and Sustainable Materials Management.
The property, now cleared, will be preserved by the Town as open space in an effort to help restore and protect the sensitive marshland area.
