The Long Island Association (LIA) Energy & Environment Committee hosted a significant event on April 17 featuring Doreen M. Harris, the president and CEO of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). The meeting, which was held to discuss New York State’s ongoing transition to renewable energy, attracted 80 members of the local business community and focused on achieving the state’s ambitious goals under the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA).

The CLCPA, enacted in 2019, mandates that 70% of New York’s electricity be derived from renewable sources by 2030. Rich Humann, Co-Chair of the Committee and President & CEO of H2M, moderated the session with Harris, which covered Long Island’s key role in the burgeoning offshore wind economy, and other renewable initiatives like solar, electric vehicles, and hydrogen; and the economic benefits of the energy transition on the local supply chain. In addition, topics such as energy efficiency and technological innovation were discussed, focusing on the importance of collaboration among residents, businesses, and government entities.

Matt Cohen, President & CEO of LIA, emphasized the economic and environmental benefits of decarbonizing the energy mix, noting Long Island’s pioneering efforts with the South Fork Wind project. “We thank President Harris for her insights, which are invaluable as we continue to lead our state’s energy transition,” said Cohen.

“Long Island’s support and vision are crucial as we work towards our clean energy goals,” Harris added. “Meetings like these are essential for fostering collaboration among residents, businesses, and government entities. We continue to make steady progress towards our clean energy goals and Long Island’s support, vision, and innovative spirit will continue to help us lead the nation in this regard.”

The committee also delved into energy efficiency and technological innovations, stressing the importance of a collaborative approach to reach the state’s renewable energy targets.

“Today’s discussion reaffirms our commitment to fostering a greener economy and an inclusive energy landscape,” said Humann. “The insights shared today reinforce our resolve to champion initiatives that promote a greener economy, foster innovation, and pave the way for an inclusive energy landscape that benefits all New Yorkers.”

David Schieren, Vice-Chair of the committee and CEO of EmPower Solar, highlighted Long Island’s active role in driving the state’s energy initiatives, particularly in solar and battery solutions.

“The conversation with Doreen Harris has been invaluable and reinforces our mission as leaders within the LIA’s Energy and Environment Committee. Long Island is not just participating in New York’s energy transition; we are actively driving it forward,” Schieren said.

Dawn Harmon, another Vice-Chair and Director at Reworld(TM) (formerly Covanta), added, “Our discussion with Doreen Harris highlights the importance of actionable strategies and collaborative efforts in reaching New York’s ambitious renewable energy goals.”
