The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office swore in 12-year-old Wyatt Houppert of Hauppauge as an Honorary Sheriff on July 22, just weeks before he undergoes a life-saving kidney transplant.

Houppert, who is battling kidney failure, was honored during a ceremony at the Sheriff’s Riverhead headquarters. He was recognized for his courage and officially welcomed into the department’s extended family. His kidney donor, Dawn Rice — the wife and sister of two Suffolk correction officers — was also honored for her life-saving generosity.

After taking the honorary oath, Houppert and his three siblings were treated to a special day with the department. Activities included emergency vehicle tours, a Drill Team presentation, and a formal salute from Sheriff’s Office personnel.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Houppert’s only kidney failed earlier this year. He is currently undergoing dialysis multiple times a week as he prepares for the transplant.
