Port Washington’s Fiesta in the Park returns for its third year with music, food and fun for all families. It will take place on October 6 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Blumenfeld Family Park, located on Port Washington’s Main Street, where it will be transformed into a festive celebration for Hispanic Heritage Month.
Fiesta in the Park will continue to build on its successes thus far. A seven-piece orchestra band will headline at the event, which includes a lineup of short intermissions of cultural performances and dance sets. The performances include cultural performances, a musical performance by the Schreiber High School Tri-M Music Honor Society Jazz Combo, a Latin American presentation by Parent Resource Center (PRC) dance students and an energetic choreography for audience members led by Kerboomkidz of Port Washington. Participating local organizations include Be the Rainbow, Daly Elementary School, Port Washington Fire Department, Manorhaven Elementary School, the Port Washington/Manhasset League of Women Voters, the Science Museum of Long Island and The Art Guild of Port Washington. All participating businesses and organizations will have booths providing a free craft or activity for the children, making this truly a family event.
The Port Washington Public Library will bring back its popular Passport Adventure where children enjoy visiting different countries (tables) where they enjoy a craft or activity and have their passport stamped. This year, they will be representing even more countries and are excited to continue to be able to represent Port Washington’s diversity.
Long Island based food trucks, including Angie’s Empanadas, Pupusa City and Cochinita Porky, will serve Latin American cuisine, such as Peruvian pupusas, tacos, empanadas and Latin American snow cones. Serving dessert to our festival goers will be Abuelita’s Desserts, a Puerto Rican dessert company based in Port Washington; Cochinyta Minutas, a Latin American snow cone cart service; and Port Washington ice cream favorite, Smusht, serving Latin American inspired flavors.
This year’s Fiesta in the Park theme is “Somos Port Washington,” which translates to “We are Port Washington.” The theme was selected by co-founders Diana Delgado-Kollar and Joseph Delerme, and a committee of organizers: Amanda Perez Leder, Anabel Walzer, Analía Quispe, Felipe Tobar, Isaac Santiago, Karla Panameño and Juliana Villamar. Based on popular demand, this year the festival themed shirts will be available for sale.
Fiesta in the Park organizers are grateful to its host the Parent Resource Center and event partners the Port Washington Public Library, Landmark on Main Street and the Town of North Hempstead. They are also grateful to the following sponsors for helping to exceed this year’s fundraising goals: Delgado Travel, Drucker Law Firm, Flatiron Pediatrics, Marcie Zack and Jackie Campos of Laffey Real Estate Port Washington, Smusht and The Alana Benjamin Group. We also thank the following families: Amanda & Jason Leder, the Delerme family, the Delgado-Kollar family in honor of Marujita and Efrain Estrella, the Madruga family and the Subramanian-Cherena family.
The PRC Latin Dance Class and Fiesta performance is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrant Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by The Huntington Arts Council.
Additional proceeds will serve to benefit the Parent Resource Center’s Stepping Stones, a weekly preschool readiness program for children from birth to 5 years old that includes family support and transportation for economically eligible families. Currently, 99% of these families are Hispanic.
Admission is free and all are welcome. Free street parking and additional parking in the Port Washington Public Library are available. In case of inclement weather, the rain date is scheduled for October 13. For real-time updates, please follow the event’s Instagram and Facebook page @hispanicheritagepw.
