In observance of Earth Day on April 22, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Dan Panico and Councilperson Jonathan Kornreich came together at West Meadow Beach in Stony Brook to film an educational video addressing the issue of illegal dumping. The video, aimed at curbing the improper disposal of waste in town dumpsters, was shot in a parking lot where a town dumpster was visibly overflowing with household trash and yard waste.

During the video shoot, the officials highlighted the environmental and legal consequences of such actions. They pointed out that fines for illegal dumping could range from $2,000 to as high as $10,000, underscoring the seriousness with which the town views these offenses.

The initiative follows a public hearing held on April 4 at the Town Board Meeting, where amendments were made to Chapter 45 of the Town Code to establish penalties specifically for dumping in town dumpsters, public receptacles, and public recycling receptacles. The Town Board unanimously voted to adopt the new law.

The video will be broadcasted on Brookhaven Cable Channel 18 and made available on the Town’s website at www.BrookhavenNY.gov, as well as the Town’s Facebook page @Town of Brookhaven.
