The Nassau County Department of Public Works (DPW) completed designs for infrastructure repairs to Shore Road in Port Washington on August 13, and submitted these designs to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) for review.
The designs must receive DEC approval so that Nassau County can obtain a wetland permit necessary for the project, which will address damage to a seawall section, sidewalk, and a portion of Shore Road’s southbound travel lane that was discovered earlier this summer.
Cognizant of the daily lane closure that has been implemented on Shore Road, officials told Legislative Minority Leader Delia DeRiggi-Whitton (D-Glen Cove) and her colleagues that the DPW is following up with the DEC daily for updates and is working to advance the project as swiftly as possible.
“I am glad to see that a repair plan is under review and the emergency repair work for this critical thoroughfare in our community is moving in the right direction,” DeRiggi-Whitton said. “I appreciate the DPW’s close attention to this vital project, and we thank everyone for their patience and understanding as we work together to navigate this challenging situation.”
Shore Road is used by approximately 12,000 residents and an estimated 8,000 vehicles weekly. Governor Kathy Hochul recently awarded $7.7 million in state funding to the Village of Baxter Estates to be used toward infrastructure upgrades that secure the
seawall, mitigate flooding, reduce coastal erosion, and more. On July 30, emergency work was completed to install a temporary barrier adjacent to the eroded section of Shore Road.
