Man Injured After Being Struck by Boat Propeller

Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers helped rescue a man after he fell off a boat and was struck by its propeller.

An operator was backing out a 30-foot aluminum barge at Sailors Haven Boat Basin on June 15 at 3:30 p.m., when an occupant lost his balance and fell off, striking the propeller. The occupant suffered a leg injury and was removed from the water before police arrived. Multiple Marine Bureau officers responded, and Officer Joseph Riviello applied two tourniquets to the man’s leg.

The man, 18, of Utah, was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
