Homeowners across Long Island will soon see some financial relief, as New York prepares to send out $698.4 million in property tax rebates through the STAR program—benefiting more than 582,000 residents.
As part of a statewide $2.2 billion initiative, the relief comes in the form of either a property tax exemption or a mailed check for eligible homeowners. Most will receive between $350 and $600, while seniors in the Enhanced STAR program could see $700 to $1,500. Checks will begin arriving next week and continue through the fall.
“Summer is here — and it’s also the start of STAR tax relief season for millions of New Yorkers,” Hochul said. “From tax credits to child care assistance and much more, we’re continuing to put more money back in New Yorkers’ pockets.”
STAR credits are determined based on household income and local school tax rates. To qualify, homeowners must live in their primary residence and meet income thresholds—under $500,000 for Basic STAR and under $107,300 for Enhanced STAR.
As school tax deadlines approach in some parts of the state, STAR credits are being distributed accordingly. Residents in New York City and other major urban centers can expect to receive their checks by mid-July, while others will continue to receive benefits throughout the summer and early fall.
State Senator Monica R. Martinez (D-Brentwood) highlighted the importance of this assistance for Long Island families facing the region’s high cost of living.
“Thanks to the STAR program, nearly 3 million New York State families—including more than 580,000 on Long Island—are seeing meaningful tax relief this year,” Martinez said. “Providing $2.2 billion in assistance will ease the financial burden on New Yorkers, improve homeownership affordability, and give families more flexibility in managing their household budgets.”
Assemblymember Charles D. Lavine (D-Glen Cove) also praised the program’s positive impact.
“I am grateful to Governor Hochul for supporting this wonderful program and making it easier than ever to get real money back in the pockets of New Yorkers,” Lavine said. “She continues to prioritize the economic needs of hard-working families and seniors, and I commend her for that. I encourage everyone to use the online STAR resource center to determine eligibility.”
Eligible residents can visit ny.gov/STAR to track their check delivery, check their benefit status, or enroll in direct deposit. Those who sign up for direct deposit fewer than 15 days before their credit is issued will receive a check this year and switch to electronic payments next year.
