Town Launches Online Portal for Planning, Building Applications

By Cooper Smith

The Town of East Hampton has officially launched a new online portal designed to streamline the application process for planning, building, and other municipal services as part of a broader effort to modernize local government operations.

As of April 28, all Planning Department applications must be submitted through the newly implemented Online Permitting & Licensing OpenGov Portal. Starting May 19, the Building Department will also require digital submissions.

The platform offers a centralized, user-friendly interface that allows residents, business owners, and contractors to submit and track applications, communicate directly with Town staff, and manage approvals across multiple departments. The portal supports submissions for the Planning Department, Building Department, Architectural Review Board, Zoning Board of Appeals, Planning Board, Ordinance Enforcement, Fire Marshal, Marine Patrol, and the Natural Resources Department.

To access the system, users must first create an OpenGov account. The site provides step-by-step instructions to assist new users in creating profiles and navigating the platform securely.

Recognizing that some community members may need help transitioning to the new digital system, the Town is offering in-person, telephone, and email support from staff throughout the process.

“This is about using technology to meet people where they are and continue to build a responsive, modern local government,” said Town Supervisor Kathee Burke-Gonzalez. “The OpenGov Portal will make it easier and faster for residents and businesses to navigate the application process, while also improving transparency and service delivery.”

Town Councilmember Tom Flight, who helped lead the implementation effort, added, “Transitioning to OpenGov brings greater convenience, better tracking, and faster application processes. It also helps the Town operate more efficiently and sustainably. We’re excited to see this improvement rolled out for the benefit of our residents and businesses.”
