Prior to the June 6 Town Board Meeting, the Color Guard from VFW Post 3054 in Setauket presented the colors in honor of the 80th Anniversary of D-Day (June 6, 1944).
During the ceremony, Town Historian Barbara Russell read a poignant letter that her father wrote in the days after he had stormed Normandy Beach as part of the invasion. Supervisor Dan Panico spoke about the bravery of the soldiers and asked all in the audience to remember those who perished on that day.
According to The National D-Day Memorial Foundation, over 4,415 Allied soldiers died on D-Day, with U.S. Servicemen accounting for 2,502 of the deaths.
