Brookhaven Town Supervisor Dan Panico announced at a press conference at Town Hall on March 6 that the town will more than double the number of its remote recycling events for the spring and fall from six — one in each council district — to 13, which will consist of two events in each district, plus a townwide event.

The expansion was the result of a $20,000 donation from the events’ sponsors: Suffolk Credit Union; Gershow Recycling; Maggio Environmental, LLC; and Winters Bros., a WM Company. Each

contributed $5,000. Christine Fetten, PE, commissioner of the town’s recycling departmrnt, said the town was “so thankful and grateful” to the sponsors “to make these events very successful.”

“We are grateful for this donation,” Panico added. “It’s going to go a long way to help our residents recycle better and have more events.”

Thirteen E-Waste, Paper Shredding and Drug Take Back events will be held in the spring and fall at various locations in the Town of Brookhaven. These events will provide Brookhaven residents with convenient opportunities to safely shred documents, dispose of electronic waste and old prescription medications, thus keeping harmful material out of landfills and waterways. In addition, the Town of Brookhaven will, for the first time , allow residents to drop off their cardboard recycling at these events. All shredded paper documents will be recycled.

Councilman Neil Manzella said these events are extremely popular. “We’ve had a massive turnout at Sachem Library and to keep doing that is just fantastic,” he said. “This is not something we do for publicity. We have hundreds of people come out for every event. This is a benefit for the environment, the community and everyone involved.”

“Thanks to the continued partnership with our generous sponsors, these recycling events offer residents a responsible way to dispose of materials that could otherwise harm our environment,” Panico said. “I strongly encourage all Brookhaven residents to take advantage of these convenient opportunities and help make a positive difference in our town.”
