Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the discovery of a body found at a demolition site in Port Jefferson Station.
A person found the body of an adult female at the Lawrence Aviation Industries Incorporated site, located at 100 Sheep Pasture Road, on February 8 at approximately 11:50 a.m. The body was taken to the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner for an autopsy to determine the cause of death and the identity of the deceased.
According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Lawrence Aviation was placed on the National Priorities List at the request of the NYSDEC in 1999. A year later, it was designated as a Superfund site. From 1959 to 2003, the company produced titanium sheet metal for the aviation industry. During and after operations, it was discovered that there were toxic chemicals that permeated the soil and into the groundwater.
Detectives are asking anyone with information to contact the Homicide Squad at 631-852-6392 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls can remain anonymous.
