In a decisive move to revitalize the community and restore natural beauty to the South Shore, Brookhaven Town Councilwoman Karen Dunne Kesnig oversaw the demolition of a long-abandoned “zombie house” located at 51 Grove Road in Mastic Beach on September 22.

The property, severely damaged during Superstorm Sandy, had remained vacant following the passing of its homeowner. Over the years, the structure deteriorated significantly, becoming a safety hazard and an eyesore for local residents.

Under Dunne Kesnig’s direction, the Brookhaven Town Department of Recycling and Sustainable Materials Management crew executed the demolition and site cleanup. The removal of the dilapidated structure marks a significant step in the Town’s ongoing efforts to eliminate blight and restore neglected properties.

“This is more than just a demolition—it’s a renewal,” said Dunne Kesnig. “We’re committed to improving quality of life for our residents and protecting the natural environment that makes Mastic Beach so special.”

Following the cleanup, the lot will be returned to its natural state, blending seamlessly into the surrounding South Shore marshland. Neighbors expressed their appreciation for the town’s action, noting the positive impact on both aesthetics and safety in the area.
