Approved Budget Contains No Tax Hikes

The North Hempstead Town Board unanimously approved its 2026 budget during a special Town Board budget meeting held on October 28. The approved $138 million spending plan freezes taxes after three consecutive years of tax cuts with no reduction to services.

The budget was passed unanimously by all those present, with Councilwoman Christine Liu absent from the proceedings. The budget’s adoption marks the culmination of the annual budgeting process, as New York State law requires the Town Board to ratify a budget by November 20. It also continues a long-held practice within the town of voting publicly on town budgets before Election Day.

Key highlights of the 2026 budget include:

  • No increase in taxes for the fourth straight year
  • Full preservation of programs and services
  • No increase in personnel
  • Reduction in long-term debt service
  • Coverage of mandated increases, including contractual labor costs, insurance, tort liability, and utilities

The 2026 budget continues a successful four-year fiscal strategy that has saved taxpayers a combined 22% with no drop off in services, increased infrastructure spending, and regular operating surpluses.

“This budget reflects a taxpayer-first approach,” Town Supervisor Jennifer DeSena said. “My goal is to streamline services without compromising them, and that’s not possible without the hard work of our dedicated teams from the budget office straight through to our highway crews.”

The final budget is available online at www.northhempsteadny.gov/budget2026 or can be obtained in person at the Town Clerk’s Office during regular business hours.
