More than $2 million in federal funding for critical airport infrastructure upgrades at Francis S. Gabreski Airport in Westhampton Beach and Elizabeth Field on Fishers Island.
These grants, awarded through the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Airport Infrastructure Grants (AIG) program within the Department of Transportation, will enhance safety, operations, and efficiency at two important aviation hubs in Suffolk County.
A $1,163,000 grant will fund Phase 3 of the tower reconstruction project at Gabreski Airport. Specific upgrades in this phase include:
- Site development
- Roofing installation
- Pavement improvements
- Tree removal
- Architectural interior finishings
Improvements to the tower will ensure the airport continues to meet modern safety and operational standards.
A $924,459 grant will fund the final phase of runway and lighting system reconstruction at Elizabeth Field on Fishers Island. Specific upgrades in this phase include:
- Reconstructing the runway end identifier lights system for Runways 12/30 and 7/25
- Rehabilitating existing lighting on both runways
- Reconstructing airfield signage
“This is a major win for Suffolk County. Francis S. Gabreski Airport and Elizabeth Field are vital to our region’s transportation network, economy, and public safety,” said U.S. Representative Nick LaLota (R-Patchogue). “These investments will enhance safety, create jobs, and strengthen the infrastructure that keeps our communities connected and secure.”
LaLota said that Long Islanders “have notoriously paid more in taxes to Washington than we get back so it’s important we see an appropriate return in the form of federal infrastructure improvements. I’ll continue fighting to ensure Long Island receives the federal resources it needs and deserves.”
