A West Babylon man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for possession of a gun and drugs.

On September 16, 2023, members of the Suffolk County Police Department responded to the corner  of 7th Avenue and 15th Street in West Babylon, on reports of a male slumped over behind the steering wheel of a parked vehicle. Upon arrival, the officer observed Joshua Oltchick’s vehicle parked facing the wrong direction with its engine still running. The officer approached the vehicle and saw a firearm between the defendant’s legs on the driver’s seat, which was ultimately found to be a loaded Beretta .380 auto caliber semiautomatic pistol.

The officer was able to open the vehicle door, reach in, and turn the engine off. A subsequent  search of the vehicle resulted in the recovery of 8.25 ounces of pressed fentanyl pills, 1,930 milligrams of cocaine, and 1,080 milligrams of amphetamine, all packaged in a manner consistent with street-level drug sales. Moreover, detectives found drug packaging material, dilutants — which are used to extend the supply of narcotics — two digital scales, two cell phones, and $3,319 in cash.

On October 2, 2024, Oltchick pleaded guilty before Acting Supreme Court Justice Steven Pilewski to second-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a Class A felony,  and second-degree attempted criminal possession of a weapon, a Class C violent felony.

On November 4, 2024, Oltchick, 26, was sentenced to 10 years in prison followed by five years of post-release supervision. He has a prior conviction from 2022 for third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

“Every fentanyl pill that this armed prior felon intended to sell in Suffolk County is a potential  fatal overdose and, thankfully, our Suffolk County police officers interrupted his crimes with good  police work,” said Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney. “This ten-year sentence should send the message that  we will not tolerate those who sell poison in Suffolk County.”
