A man from upstate New York was arrested for attempted grand larceny after allegedly trying to scam an elderly woman from Westbury.

On March 1 at 7:30 p.m., an 84-year-old female received a phone call from an unknown male who stated her grandson had been arrested and needed $9,800 to be bailed out of jail. The victim, suspecting it was a possible scam, called Nassau County’s Third Squad to report the incident and request assistance. Detectives responded to the victim’s residence and when the suspect came to retrieve the money, defendant Etienne Jackson, 39, of 1060 Broadway, Menands, New York was placed under arrest without incident.

Jackson was charged with third-degree attempted grand larceny and was arraigned on March 2 at First District Court in Hempstead.

The Nassau County Police Department urges the community to be on alert and to remind vulnerable family members, friends, and neighbors about potential scams or frauds.
