Uniondale Man Arrested for Alleged Shoplifting

Eighth Squad Detectives report the arrest of a Uniondale man for allegedly stealing an item from a Bethpage supermarket.

On January 9 at 3:25 p.m., Steve Muir entered Shop Rite located at 3901 Hempstead Turnpike. The subject allegedly stole and displayed violent behavior in the past at the same location.  The subject was reportedly observed placing a bottle of soda in his waistband and attempted to leave without paying for the item.

Loss prevention employees confronted Muir and requested he follow them to the loss prevention office.  Muir allegedly lowered his shoulder, charged at the employees and a struggle ensued. During the altercation, Muir sprayed an irritant at the employees. The substance caused employees to suffer substantial pain, which included burning and itching sensations to their throat and eyes. When police arrived, Muir, 26, of 1099 Van Buren Street, was arrested.  Muir was also allegedly in possession of a knife.

The two male victims, ages 41 and 70, were treated by a Nassau County Police Medic at the scene.

Police charged Muir with Robbery in the Second Degree, three counts of Assault in the Third Degree, Assault in the Second Degree, two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree. He was arraigned on January 10 at First District Court in Hempstead.
