
A Rockaway Park man has been arrested for allegedly carrying a gun while being pulled over for a traffic stop. The Fourth Squad reports the arrest of a Rockaway Park man for Criminal Possession of a Weapon.
The incident occurred on Monday, June 2, 2025 at 9:27 a.m. in Hewlett. Fourth Precinct Officers observed a 2009 Mazda traveling westbound on Main Street near the intersection of Howland Road in East Rockaway without a front license plate. A Vehicle and Traffic Law stop was conducted on Broadway near the intersection of East Rockaway Road. During the course of the investigation, the driver of the vehicle was discovered to have a suspended driver’s license and was also wanted for burglary by the Cranford Township Police Department in New Jersey. The driver, Loquinne Mathis Jr., 21, of 209 Beach 101st Street, was placed under arrest without incident. Further investigation resulted in an unloaded illegal firearm, a USPS jacket, a credit card scanner and two printers being recovered from the vehicle.
Defendant Mathis is charged with Third Degree Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Criminal Possession of a Firearm, Fourth Degree Criminal Possession of a Weapon, outstanding New Jersey Burglary Warrant and multiple Vehicle Traffic Law violations in Hempstead.
