Suffolk County Police arrested a man for attempting to scam a woman in Lindenhurst.
A 77-year-old woman received an alert on her computer indicating that her bank account had been compromised and instructing her to call the number listed on the screen. She called the number, and a man convinced her to withdraw cash from her bank account. The man picked up more than $16,000 in cash from her residence on October 2 at approximately 1:30 p.m.
The victim received another call on October 3 seeking an additional $10,000. The woman called police, who arrested Gurpreet Singh at the victim’s home in Lindenhurst at approximately 1:10 p.m.
First Squad detectives charged Singh, 29, of Queens, with third-degree grand larceny. He was held at the First Precinct and scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on October 4.
The investigation is continuing. Detectives believe another man collected the money from the victim on October 2.
