Members of the Suffolk and New York State police departments conducted another investigation inside and around the house of Rex Heuermann, who has been known as the Gilgo Beach serial killer, Long Island Life & Politics has learned. It is unclear what the purpose of the search was.
As previously reported in Long Island Life & Politics, Rex Heuermann of Massapequa Park was arrested in connection with the murders of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman and Amber Costello. He was also suspected of killing Maureen Brainard-Barnes. After his indictment, police searched his home and found nearly 300 guns (92 of which had permits), cat food, a doll resembling a child in a display case and a scratching post.
According to news reports, a number of police vehicles were parked in front of the house and helicopters were flying overhead during today’s search. Long Island Life & Politics reached out to Suffolk and New York State police; they referred LILP to Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney’s office.
LILP also reached to Tierney’s office. His spokesperson replied via email, “As District Attorney Tierney has previously stated, the work of the Gilgo Beach Homicide Task force is continuing. We do not comment on investigative steps while ongoing.” The spokesperson added, “State Police have been a part of the Gilgo Task Force since the outset and have been working with us all along.”
LILP will continue to follow this story and report on the latest developments as they come in.
