Patchogue Man Arrested for Hiding Human Remains

By Hank Russell

Suffolk County police arrested a Patchogue man for tampering with evidence and concealment of a corpse after human remains were discovered in East Patchogue.

During an investigation by Fifth Squad detectives, human remains were discovered along Montauk Highway near County Road 101 on June 27 at 4:30 p.m. The remains were transported to the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner for an autopsy and identification.

Following an investigation by Homicide Squad and Fifth Squad detectives, police arrested Garry Cowell, 72, of 20 Edwards St., and charged him with tampering with physical evidence and concealment of a
human corpse. Cowell was scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on June 28.

Long Island Life & Politics reached out to the SCPD to see if the discovery of the remains is connected to the Gilgo Beach case or the other case in West Babylon. LILP previously reported on Rex Heuermann being charged with two additional counts of murder after being connected with the remains of one woman found in Manorville and the other’s remains found in North Sea. Another case that LILP reported was the arrest of four people in Amityville for killing and dismembering a couple from Yonkers. The body parts were buried in Southards Pond Park, Bethpage State Park, and a wooded area in West Babylon.

LILP also asked if a cause of death was determined and if a positive identification of the body was made yet. In an email, the SCPD responded, “There is no additional information.”

LILP will continue to follow up on this case.
