A Mastic Beach woman has been arrested for Grand Larceny and Assault in Baldwin.

On August 26 at 5:03 a.m., a 61-year-old male victim called police to report that his 2015, blue, Dodge Caravan had been taken without permission from the parking lot of the 7-11 located at 2350 Grand Avenue. The victim had left his car running, with the keys in the ignition when an unknown female allegedly entered the driver’s side door of the car and proceeded to drive away.

Upon arrival, responding Nassau County First Precinct Officers broadcast a description of the vehicle. A short time later, Freeport Police observed the vehicle on Sunrise Highway in Freeport. Nassau County Police and Freeport Police marked patrol units canvassed the area and witnessed the vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed through the Village of Freeport, Baldwin, and Oceanside. While fleeing, the defendant, Jiyell T Jones, 27, of 175 Bayview Drive, allegedly hit a fence, a light pole and an occupied Freeport Police Department vehicle, and failed to stop.

Jones eventually fled southbound onto the Meadowbrook State Parkway where she lost control of the vehicle where it became disabled and became engulfed in flames in the marshland. While taking Jones into custody, a Freeport Police Officer fell into a ditch and sustained an injury to his right knee. The defendant was then transported to the First Precinct for arrest processing.

Police charged Jones with Grand Larceny in the Third degree, Assault in the Second Degree, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Third Degree, Reckless Endangerment in the Second Degree, Unlawful Fleeing of a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle in the Third Degree, and major traffic infractions. She was scheduled to be arraigned on  August 27 at First District Court in Hempstead.
