Man Indicted for Alleged Fatal Stabbing on Christmas Eve

A man was arraigned on murder and weapons charges for allegedly stabbing his mother to death at her Massapequa apartment on Christmas Eve.

On December 24, 2024, at approximately 6:30 p.m., 57-year-old Josefina Ramirez Montero, was inside her upstairs apartment at 5714 Old Sunrise Highway in Massapequa when her youngest son, Jeremy Emmanuel Lopez Ramirez, left to go to a nearby laundromat. Upon his return, Lopez Ramirez allegedly began attacking his mother with a six-inch knife, puncturing her four times, including a stab wound to the heart. He then left the apartment and allegedly attempted to bury the knife in the ground outside the building.

Ramirez Montero was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Lopez Ramirez, 27, was arraigned on January 16 before Judge Robert McDonald on charges of second-degree murder (a Class A-I felony) and two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon (a Class D felony). Lopez Ramirez pleaded not guilty and was remanded. He is due back in court on February 19, 2025. If convicted, the defendant faces up to 32 years to life in prison.

“The holiday season is a time for families to come together, but this defendant’s alleged actions tore his family apart when he fatally plunged a knife directly into his mother’s heart on Christmas Eve,” said Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly. “A grief-stricken family was left to spend their Christmas mourning the senseless and tragic loss of their mother, taken from them by the hands of their own blood, according to the charges. Our thoughts are with Josefina’s family, friends, and all who loved her as we prosecute this devastating crime.”
