Tried to Steal Merchandise from Drug Store, Found with Crack
Nassau County police officers from the First Squad arrested a homeless man for resisting arrest after he was caught shoplifting in a Baldwin store.
On April 17 at 12:54 p.m., police responded to Walgreens located at 1968 Grand Avenue for a larceny in progress. Upon arrival, they were informed that Douglas Shanahan, 46, had attempted to steal various items from the store. Shanahan fled the scene on foot.
After a thorough investigation, officers located Shanahan nearby and attempted to place him into custody when he became violent and combative. Officers had to use a Taser in order to subdue him. They also recovered a white powdery substance believed to be crack cocaine on the defendant. He was transported to a local area hospital for evaluation and treatment.
Police charged Shanahan with fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, third-degree criminal trespass, petit larceny, resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration. He was scheduled to be arraigned on April 18 in First District Court in Hempstead.
