Heuermann Named a Suspect in Killing of Seventh Woman

By Hank Russell

Rex Heuermann has been named as a suspect in the slaying of a seventh woman whose dismembered remains were found at two separate locations.

On July 30, Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney announced that Heuermann, also known as the “Gilgo Beach Killer,” has been named as a suspect in the murder of Valerie Mack, according to various news sources.

As previously reported in Long Island Life & Politics, Heuermann, 60, was arrested in connection with the murders of three women last year — Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman and Amber Costello — and was suspected of killing Maureen Brainard-Barnes. He was soon charged with Brainard-Barnes’ murder.

It was also reported by LILP that Heuermann, of Massapequa Park, was charged with the murders of two more women: Jessica Taylor and Sandra Costilla. Taylor’s remains were buried along Ocean Parkway in Gilgo Beach and near Halsey Manor Road in Manorville. Costilla’s body was found around Old Fish Cove Road in North Sea.

According to the DA’s Office, Mack’s remains were discovered in 2000 in two separate locations, one on Mill Road near Ocean Parkway. Tierney told reporters it was “safe to say” that Heuermann is suspceted of killing Mack.

LILP reached out to the Suffolk DA’s Office for more information but was referred to the bail letter from June 6.

Heuermann, whose last court appearance was June 6, is scheduled to return to court on October 16.
