Hempstead Man Arrested for Allegedly Possessing Gun, Stolen Property

A Hempstead man has been arrested allegedly possessing a gun and stolen property in New Cassel.

On September 19 at 4 a.m., Nassau County officers from the Third Precinct responded to the vicinity of 268 Magnolia Avenue for a suspicious person pulling on car door handles. Upon arrival, officers located Melvin Daniels, 20, of 90 Stewart Avenue, in front of 252 Green Street.

After an investigation, he was placed into police custody. Subsequent to the investigation, Daniels was allegedly found to be in possession of a loaded Smith and Wesson semi-automatic handgun. While officers were processing the arrest, Daniels allegedly assaulted another unrelated defendant in the Third Precinct holding cell.

Police charged Daniels with Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, Assault in the Third Degree and Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Fourth Degree. He was arraigned on September 20 at First District Court in Hempstead.
