First Arrest Made for Violating Nassau’s Mask Ban

A Hicksville man has been arrested for violating Nassau County’s mask ban. This is the first type of arrest that has been made since the ban went into effect.

August 25, 2024 at 7:54 p.m., Nassau Eighth Squad officers responded to reports of a suspicious male who was walking eastbound on Spindle Road in Levittown, dressed in black, and wearing a mask to conceal his identity. Upon further investigation, the defendant, Wesslin Omar Ramirez Castillo, 18, of 206 Division Avenue, continued to display suspicious behavior while attempting to conceal a large bulge in his waistband which turned out to be a 14-inch knife. Castillo refused to comply with officers’ commands as he was placed under arrest without further incident.

Police charged Castillo with Criminal Possession of a Weapon 4th Degree, Obstructing Governmental Administration 2nd Degree, and violating the Mask Transparency Act. He was arraigned on August 26 at First District Court in Hempstead.
