A Brentwood man has been indicted for allegedly shooting another man to death during a dispute.
On August 30 at about 6:00 p.m., Romero Campbell, also known as “Romeo,” and Joshua Jasmin were allegedly engaged in a verbal dispute on the front lawn of Campbell’s Brentwood residence on Charter Oaks Avenue. During the exchange, Campbell allegedly fired two shots from a shotgun, both hitting Jasmin, 29, in the torso, causing him to fall to the ground. An eyewitness observed much of the exchange and noted that Jasmin was unarmed.
When Suffolk County Police officers arrived at the scene, they found Jasmin both without a pulse and shirtless, lying partly in the roadway with multiple gunshot wounds to his torso. He was pronounced dead at South Shore University Hospital. Body camera footage of the scene captured by a responding officer supported the eyewitness’ account that Jasmin was unarmed.
At that point in the investigation, it was unknown whether there were additional victims of violence on the property, whether there was an active shooter situation, and whether the officers themselves or the public were currently in danger. Accordingly, officers actively canvassed the Charter Oaks Avenue property.
When officers entered the side gate of the property, they came upon a doorway where an open mesh curtain gave view to a kitchen. A shotgun was observed standing vertically inside the doorway and a shotgun shell casing was spotted on the kitchen floor. Officers then observed Campbell standing nearby. After further investigation, Campbell was identified as the alleged shooter and safely taken into custody.
Video surveillance was also obtained from an adjacent property that captured the shooting, including the audio. In that surveillance recording, Jasmin can be observed having an argument with an individual outside the view of the camera prior to being shot. While the shooter was outside of the camera’s view, on multiple occasions, Jasmin is heard calling him “Rome.”
On September 12, Campbell, 23, was arraigned on the indictment before, Acting Supreme Court Justice Karen M. Wilutis for second-degree murder, a Class A felony. Wilutis ordered Campbell held remanded during the pendency of the case. Campbell is due back in court on October 16, 2024, and faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted on the top count.
“The charges that have been filed detail a tragic and senseless act of violence,” said Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney. “We will diligently pursue justice for Joshua and his loved ones.”
