A Bay Shore man was found guilty of stabbing his girlfriend in the neck with a pair of scissors during an argument in front of their three children.

On March 28, 2023, Jorge Guevara threatened his girlfriend with a knife during an argument after she returned home from work. After the victim struggled with Guevara over the knife, he then grabbed a pair of scissors from a nearby desk and stabbed her in the neck and shoulder repeatedly. Three minor children were present during the brutal attack. After he stabbed the victim, Guevara refused to allow the victim and the children to call 911, but a good Samaritan neighbor heard the screams for help and went into the house to offer assistance.

Once inside, Guevara would not allow the neighbor to call police from a phone in the house. When she tried to leave, she could not get the front door to open, so she jumped out of a bedroom window to get to a phone to call the police. The victim was transported to South Shore University Hospital, where she suffered a deep laceration to her neck and underwent emergency surgery to close the laceration.

On June 19, Guevara, 49, was convicted of one count of first-degree attempted assault, a Class C violent felony, four counts of endangering the welfare of a child, a Class A misdemeanor, and one count of  econd-degree menacing, a Class A misdemeanor.

“The brutal attack on this woman, who was stabbed in the neck with scissors by someone she once trusted, is a harrowing reminder of the dangers faced by too many domestic violence victims,” said Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney. “Today’s guilty verdict is a step toward holding the perpetrator accountable, but it also reinforces our resolve to advocate fiercely for the safety and rights of all victims. No one should live in fear of violence at home, and we will continue to work tirelessly to support and protect those who are most vulnerable.”

Guevara is due back in court on August 22 for sentencing and faces up to 15 years in prison.
