Alleged Bloods Gang Member Sentenced to 20 Years to Life for 2023 Shooting

An alleged Bloods gang member was sentenced Wednesday to 20 years to life in prison for a shooting at an apartment building in Hempstead in January 2023.

Corey Crisp, 44, of Hempstead, was convicted after a jury trial before Judge Tammy Robbins on January 26 of first-degree attempted assault, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and second-degree criminal use of a firearm (all Class C violent felonies); third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and first-degree reckless endangerment (both Class D felonies). He was acquitted of second-degree attempted murder and first-degree criminal use of a firearm (both Class B violent felonies). Crisp is a mandatory persistent violent felony offender and was sentenced on March 20 to 20 years to life in prison.

On January 6, 2023, Corey Crisp was at 600 Fulton Avenue in Hempstead, an apartment building where his girlfriend lived. At approximately 6:00 p.m., he observed another man, the victim, and pulled out a small knife from his sweatshirt and extended the blade.

The victim ran and Crisp began chasing after him. As they crossed the lobby of the building, Crisp and the victim both pulled out semi-automatic handguns and Crisp fired down a crowded hallway. The bullet struck a wall, continued past the victim and more than half a dozen civilians, including a baby in a stroller, and struck another wall at the far end of the hallway. Crisp then fled the scene.

Crisp was arrested by the Nassau County Police Gang Investigation Squad in conjunction with the Hempstead Police Department in Hempstead on January 27, 2023.

“Corey Crisp endangered multiple residents of a Hempstead apartment building, including a baby in a stroller, when he chased down a man and traded gunfire with him in a hallway,” said DA Donnelly. “This defendant has a lengthy violent criminal past dating back decades,” said Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly. “He placed innocent people in harm’s way with total disregard. [The] sentence [imposed on March 20] will make our communities safer.”
