A woman from Wyandanch has been arrested for allegedly striking a pedestrian with her vehicle last month, then driving off, resulting in the pedestrian’s death.

On November 8 at 1:50 p.m., Octavio Dejesus Espinal Sime, 76, of West Babylon, was crossing North Grove Street at the intersection of Brooklyn Avenue in Freeport when he was struck by a light-colored sedan allegedly driven by Heidy Zelaya Almendarez. The vehicle then fled from the scene southbound.

Dejesus Espinal Sime was transported to an area hospital by a Northwell Health ambulance, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Police arrested Zelaya Almendarez on December 29 and charged her with Leaving the Scene of an Incident without Reporting with a Fatality and Tampering with Physical Evidence.  She was arraigned on the same day at First District Court in Hempstead.
