Trooper Injured Making DWAI Arrest

A Brooklyn man was arrested for resisting arrest, which caused a New York State Police (NYSP) trooper to be injured, as well as driving under the influence.

On November 18th at approximately 9 a.m., a state trooper responded to a two-car collision on the westbound Southern State Parkway in the vicinity of Exit 13 (Central Avenue). Upon investigation, it was determined that the crash was caused by a Green Honda Odyssey, which was stopped in the middle lane. The Honda was not directly involved in the collision, but it caused other vehicles to change lanes and collide. After the two-car collision was cleared, the trooper approached the Honda Odyssey, which was moved to the shoulder.

The driver of the Honda Odyssey, later identified as 35-year-old Kelvin Almonte, was interviewed by the trooper. Based on the interaction, the trooper suspected Almonte was under the influence of alcohol and drugs. The trooper conducted a DWI investigation and concluded that Almonte was under the influence. During the arrest, Almonte became non-compliant, and a struggle ensued. A Nassau County Police Department sergeant who was on the scene helped the trooper subdue Almonte.

Almonte was taken into custody without further incident, and he was transported to the East Meadow barracks for processing. The trooper sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the altercation.

Almonte was charged with second-degree Obstructing Governmental Administration and Resisting Arrest (both Class A Misdemeanors), Driving While Ability Impaired (an Unclassified Misdemeanor) and Vehicle and Traffic Law Violations.
