Three-Car Crash at Mall Parking Lot Injures Pedestrian

Suffolk County Police Fourth Squad detectives are investigating a three-vehicle crash that seriously injured a pedestrian in a Lake Grove parking lot this afternoon.  

On November 1, Hannelore Groschke was backing a 2017 Hyundai Elantra out of a parking stall at 2089 Smith Haven Plaza when she accelerated and struck a pedestrian, Verbena Santo, in addition to a 2021 Mercedes Benz  GL5, and a 2021 Subaru Forester, at 3:46 p.m. 

Santo, 77, of Coram, was transported via ambulance to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of serious physical injuries. Groschke, 90, of St. James, was not injured. Neither the driver of the Mercedes, Jason Helfstein, 50, of New York, or the driver of the Subaru, Anthony Ferrara, 32, of  Ronkonkoma, was injured.  

All three vehicles were impounded for safety checks. Anyone with information on the crash is asked to contact Fourth Squad detectives at 631-854-8452.
