The New York State Police announced that it will step up efforts to combat speeding and impaired driving during Columbus Day Weekend. The Columbus Day Speed and Impaired Driving Enforcement Initiative aims to reduce the number of incidents caused by dangerous driving behaviors. Speed and impaired driving continue to be the leading causes of fatalities on highways and account for approximately one-third of all fatal crashes.
In New York State, fines for a first-time speeding conviction range from $45 up to 10 miles per hour over the speed limit to $600 by more than 30 miles per hour.
“We would like everyone to enjoy a safe holiday weekend and make the right choice,” the New York State Police said in a statement. “These incidents are 100% preventable. Obey the speed limit, designate a sober driver, or plan for a ride share to get home safely. Wear your seatbelt and do not drive distracted. Our message will not change: obey the law.”
