A Rocky Point man was indicted for allegedly striking two men who were attending to a disabled vehicle on the William Floyd Parkway, one of them dead.
One of the victims, Edgar Mejia 31, of Mastic Beach was killed and the other sustained serious injuries.
On January 29 at approximately 6:44 p.m., Shaver was driving a 2012 Honda Accord northbound on William Floyd Parkway when he allegedly struck Mejia and a relative, who were on the shoulder of the road fixing a tire. Shaver allegedly left the scene without seeking aid for the victims or contacting the police.
Mejia died as a result of the injuries that he sustained from the crash. The injured relative was transported to a local hospital, where he is currently listed in critical condition after having sustained serious injuries, including a traumatic brain injury.
Video surveillance was recovered near to the scene of the crash that allegedly captured Shaver visiting various establishments in the Shirley area before the crash. In addition, police obtained video that allegedly captured the defendant’s vehicle after the crash, traveling northbound without a passenger-side headlight.
On January 30, Suffolk police tracked down Shaver’s Honda Accord parked in front of his home with front-end damage. Shaver was arrested and his vehicle was impounded as evidence.
On February 13, Shaver, 51, was arraigned on the indictment before Acting Supreme Court Justice Anthony S. Senft, Jr., for Leaving the Scene of an Incident Without Reporting, a Class D felony and Leaving the Scene of an Incident Without Reporting, a Class E felony.
Senft ordered held on $100,000 cash, $200,00 bond or $1,000,000 partially secured bond during the pendency of the case. Shaver is due back in court on March 10, 2026, and faces 2-⅓ to seven years in prison if convicted on the top count.
“The defendant allegedly struck two men who were simply trying to fix a tire on the shoulder of the parkway and fled the scene without stopping to render aid. One victim has died and the other is fighting for his life,” said Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney. “We owe it to them and their families to pursue justice, and this indictment is an important step in that direction.”
