Pedestrian Hit, Killed in Hempstead; Driver Charged

A 23-year-old man has died after being hit by a car while crossing the street in Hempstead. The driver has been arrested.

On October 31 at 11:40 p.m., a 71-year-old male was driving a 2023 Jeep Gladiator southbound on North Franklin Avenue in the vicinity of Centre Street, where he struck a 23-year-old male pedestrian who was crossing North Franklin Avenue.

The pedestrian suffered severe body trauma and was transported by a Northwell Hospital Ambulance to a local hospital for treatment. The victim was pronounced dead by a hospital physician. The driver of the Jeep remained at the scene.

A thorough investigation determined that the driver of the Jeep, Jose Forero, 71, of 395 Sherbourne Road, Valley Stream, was intoxicated. He was arrested without incident.

Police charged Forero with Vehicular Manslaughter in the First Degree, Vehicular Manslaughter in the Second Degree and Driving While Intoxicated. He is scheduled to be arraigned on November 1 at First District Court in Hempstead.
