Medford Man Arrested for DWAI Following Fatal Motorcycle Crash

Suffolk County Police arrested a Medford man for DWAI following a crash that killed a motorcyclist in Islandia.

On October 21, Alan Mercado was driving a 2010 Honda on the westbound Long Island Expressway, just east of exit 57, when he attempted to move from the center to the right lane and was struck from behind by a 2017 Yamaha motorcycle at 1:12 a.m.

The motorcycle operator, Idris Shehu, 20, of Hicksville, was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner. A passenger in the Honda was transported to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Mercado was not injured.

Mercado, 67, of 16 Clusterpine St., was charged with Driving While Ability Impaired By Drugs. He will be held overnight for arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip on October 22.
