Suffolk County officers arrested a man for driving while intoxicated after causing a tractor-trailer crash while heading west on the Long Island Expressway in Dix Hills.

On February 9 at about 7:48 p.m., Timothy Murray, 64, of 157 Hawthorne St., Mastic, was driving a 2016 Freightliner tractor, which was pulling a trailer when the vehicle veered off the road at the right shoulder, collided with the guardrail and stopped east of the Exit 50 off-ramp. Hundreds of feet of guardrail and two streetlamps fell down in the collision. Another vehicle hit rubble in the road and became disabled.

Two lanes of the westbound LIE were closed for more than six hours to get rid of the vehicles and empty the road, which included cleaning up motor oil and about fifty gallons of spilled diesel fuel. Suffolk County Motor Carrier Safety Section responded and conducted a post-crash inspection and NYSDEC Hazmat Spill Response arrived at the scene for the diesel fuel spill.

Murray was charged with driving while intoxicated. He was held overnight in the Third Precinct and is expected to be arraigned at First District Court on February 11.
