A Hempstead man was arrested for allegedly driving drunk as he allegedly drove the wrong way on the Long Island Expressway.
On May 18 at 6:40 a.m., officers responded to the Long Island Expressway in the vicinity of exit 37 in Roslyn for a vehicle traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes. Upon arrival, it was determined that Jorge Arias Reyes, 49, of 322 Washington Street was operating a 2009 Honda westbound and collided with a 2014 Toyota being operated by a 51-year-old male traveling eastbound. Both vehicles sustained extensive damage.
A thorough investigation determined that Arias Reyes was intoxicated. He was placed under arrest without incident. Both he and the victim were transported to an area hospital with serious injuries where they are both listed in stable condition.
Further investigation indicated that Arias Reyes was also involved in an auto accident in the vicinity of exit 41 eastbound with a 2013 Nissan being operated by a 31-year-old male. That driver was uninjured.
Police charged Arias Reyes with Driving While Intoxicated, second-degree assault, second-degree vehicular assault, second-degree reckless endangerment and leaving the scene of an accident. He will be arraigned once he is released from the hospital.
